Fairport Prepares to Advance Downtown Revitalization Initiative Application

The Village of Fairport has taken initial steps to advance a Downtown Revitalization Initiative grant application for $10 million to support continued growth and economic vitality in the central business district.

The Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) is a New York State program, designed as a regional competition for funding to support public and private investments in downtowns across the state. In the Finger Lakes Region, one community will be awarded $10 million; which can address a range of improvements, including streetscape and other infrastructure, parks, waterfront improvements, and upgrades to downtown buildings.

Communities with a demonstrated track record in strategic planning, and investments that accelerate economic growth are most competitive for DRI funding. Fairport’s recent comprehensive plan and zoning updates, its designation as a Pro Housing Community, Village and state investments in transportation and recreational amenities, and strong private sector commitments to new and upgraded buildings and businesses make it a perfect fit for the program.

In the coming weeks, Village officials will conduct a call for projects from the business community; in which business and building owners will be encouraged to submit ideas for projects to be considered for funding. The Village is working now to leverage the comprehensive plan and other strategic planning efforts to narrow in on a targeted section of downtown in which to direct investment.

“Through our comprehensive planning and zoning update processes, Village residents and stakeholders have continuously identified downtown Fairport and our Erie Canal frontage as market differentiators for the Village,” said Mayor Julie Domaratz. “Linking historic and planned downtown investments with this critical state funding will result in a multi-fold impact on downtown vitality and economic growth for Fairport.”

“We know that strong communities don’t happen by accident, but by design. With DRI support, we can accelerate transformational projects, building on our strong foundation to attract new businesses, residents, and visitors, all while preserving the character that makes Fairport so special.” said Johnna McCooey, Executive Director of the Fairport Office of Community and Economic Development.

The application process is likely to be announced later this summer, with an early fall due date. During that time, the public will be called upon to submit ideas and thoughts through a variety of public engagement efforts. Community members should monitor the Village’s social media channels, and visit the Village website at www.fairportny.org for updates and information regarding application activities.
