Fairport Bicentennial Canal Gateway Project Named Project of the Year
Fairport Bicentennial Canal Gateway project recognized by the American Public Works Association/Genesee Valley Branch.
The Genesee Valley Branch of the American Public Works Association (APWA) has announced the Village of Fairport as the 2020 recipient of the Project of the Year Award in the Small Cities/Rural Communities category for Structures Projects for the Fairport Bicentennial Canal Gateway Project.
The Project of the Year Award was established to promote excellence in demonstrating creativity, ingenuity, and efficiency in the delivery of Public Works projects that have a profound impact on the community.
Completed in September 2020, the Fairport Bicentennial Canal Gateway Project enhances connectivity to the Main Street corridor and adds new recreational opportunities and improved access to the Erie Canal with a new observation deck, boat dock and kayak launch. A commemorative timeline, incorporated in the walkway design, documents the connection between the growth of the Village of Fairport and the development of the Erie Canal.
The New York State Canal Corporation supported the project with a grant of $150,000, secured through the Finger Lakes Regional Economic Development Council (FLREDC). Additional funding was provided by the Erie Canalway Heritage Corridor and the Fairport Industrial Development Agency.
