Fairport OCED Expands Grant Program Supporting Local Businesses

Fairport Office OCED is launching a new round of funding for its Sign, Façade, and Frontage Grant Program, which supports business owners in upgrading storefronts and improving accessibility. The grant opportunity plays a central role in OCED’s broader mission to support strategic investment and thoughtful development that enhances Fairport’s unique character and charm as the “Crown Jewel of the Erie Canal.”

The grant program provides an opportunity for commercial property and business owners to invest in exterior upgrades that improve visibility and aesthetic appeal from the street, canal, and other public rights-of-way. Eligible projects can receive partial reimbursement grants of up to $10,000, with a minimum investment of $10,000. Additionally, the program includes a special incentive to improve accessibility: ADA upgrades, including fully automatic or power-assisted doors, are eligible for a 90% matching grant up to $10,000.

“Fairport has always stood out for its balance of historic charm and modern vibrancy,” said Johnna McCooey, Executive Director. “Through programs like the Sign, Façade, and Frontage Grant, we’re investing in improvements that keep our commercial corridors attractive and accessible while staying true to the character that makes Fairport a destination along the Erie Canal.”

Since launching in 2023, the program has awarded $130,000 to 15 local business and building owners, helping fuel building improvements across the Village.

Local business owner Joel Cuminale of Turning Point Signs & Design is a recent grant recipient. “Receiving this grant has given us the momentum to move forward with additional improvements to our building,” said Cuminale. “We’re excited to add new awnings, lighting, siding and trim to our facade this summer. Programs like this allow small businesses to grow and thrive in the Village. We’re thankful for the support from OCED and the Fairport community.”

By encouraging enhancements that are both practical and visually consistent with the Village’s charm, Fairport OCED continues to lead the way in smart, community-driven economic development.
