OCED Studying Ways to Help Ease North Main Street Parking Challenges

OCED Studying Ways to Help Ease North Main Street Parking Challenges

The Village of Fairport has experienced tremendous growth over the last five years, with a significant amount of private development. These projects have reenergized our restaurant, retail and recreational opportunities, drawing people from throughout the Finger Lakes Region.

However, this success is accompanied by concerns about traffic congestion, parking and pedestrian safety, primarily near the highly complex semi-gateway intersection of  North Main Street and High Street.

The Fairport Office of Community and Economic Development (OCED) has a long history of supporting the Village’s continued growth into a sought-after destination in the region to live, work and visit. OCED recognizes these concerns and, as part of its mission/responsibility is looking for ways to help bridge the gap between the existing situation and a long-term solution that meets the needs of residents, businesses and visitors.

In 2016, our public parking lot on the east side of North Main Street was comprised of 26 parking spaces. In 2017, we reconfigured and expanded the lot, increasing to 61 spaces in total at a cost of $240,400. In Fall of 2020, in anticipation of an increase in demand for parking, we graded, compacted and installed 4” of millings for an additional 14,850sf of parking surface at a cost of $15,200.

In Spring 2023 OCED is began considering cost-effective considering cost-effective options for expanding its public parking lot on the east side of North Main Street, just south of High Street.  Below is a comprehensive timeline of the Board of Directors’ discussion, traffic and pedestrian studies and designs.
